Chinatown Holds Parade To Mark The Year Of The Tiger

Chinatown in Washington DC bursts into color on Sunday as the capital held a parade to celebrate the year of the tiger. "Everyone knows it's the year of the tiger, but how many of you know that it's the year of the white tiger, which comes every 60 years?" A representative said in his address at the Lunar New Year celebration ceremony.

The parade started with dragon and lion dance, Kung Fu demonstrations and live musical performances, and ended with firecracker display.

Ronald Brisbon, a tower crane operator who sat besides the stage, referred to the event as "a nice get-together for all ages". Though he barely understood the Chinese culture, he enjoyed the feeling of celebrating festivals with different people. "I like America as a nice melting pot," said he, grinned.

Li Ping, a student from Maryland University, said the Chinatown event made her feel home. "Though, it could have been even better. We could have served snacks on the street and put on more performances of different types," said she.

The lunar New Year is the most celebrated festival in China and some other Asian countries. It is a 15-day event that starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon in 15 days. In accordance to the tradition, people usually wear red and ignite firecrackers to ward off the evil spirits and greet a better year.

If I were not searching for democracy and freedom of speech, then you would never have met me.

But I lost my self -identification in you, the melting pot.

Dragon, where is my dragon?

Around 200 Chinese students and their foreign friends gathered at the George Washington University on Feb 14 to celebrate the Chinese lunar New Year with Chinese food, singing, dancing, and games.

The gala was held in the Marvin Centre by the Chinese Student and Scholar Association (CSSA) of the George Washington University. According to Qiu Weixin, one of the CSSA members, this tradition has been around for more than ten years.

Qiu said, the gala turned out to be much better than he had expected, since the inclement snow storm had created lots of troubles for them to rehearsal.” The atmosphere was good. It seems the students like the gala,” he said.

Zhu Sha, one of the student performers, told the reporter:” Two years ago, I happened to be here for the annual gala as a visitor. Now I’m the 2rd year postgraduate student at George Washington University. I still enjoy it.”

“How do you like the gala?” asked James Chi, a Chinese who came to the gala from Maryland.  “I think it’s a good one!”said James.
